Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome: Ben's Story
Ben was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a severe heart defect, before he was born, and was 3 days old when he had the first of three open heart surgeries
at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Pediatric heart surgeon Stephanie Fuller, MD, performed all of Ben's surgeries, altering the circulation system so Ben's heart functions as a one-sided pump.
This is called Fontan circulation.
The surgeries are life saving for children with single ventricle heart defects such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS).
